I'd like to see a prison where the prisoners are issued a suit, and dress shoes, etc. ..given full meals, and health care...given drug counseling if needed...(and not arrested for bullshit in the first place, including drug charges)...treat them like human beings and you'll not create monsters.
i totally agree with the prisoners because i was incarcerated at Wabash when Aramark first took on the contract with DOC and the food was very poor quality during its inception. Our complaints went unheard!!! Aramark are the biggest pimps besides the DOC. Aramark's contract should never be renewed!!!
The Northpoint, KY prison riot was propelled not only by the lousy food, but Aramark also controlled the canteen prices, the only alternative to their crappy food, and make it far more expensive than it should have been.
In addition, the state administration was corrupt. The governor was an indicted crook. He hired his Commissioner of Corrections directly from being a VP for Corrections Corporation of America and clearly was willing to screw both the inmates and the taxpayers, and to jeopardize the safety of corrections officers, by creating this volatile situation that prioritized the profits of the vendors over good correctional practice.
The inmates, having no other ability to express their concerns, in exasperation "voted with their matches." The resultant fires did about $11 million worth of damage. The apparent corruptive relationship obviously did an enormous amount of harm to the taxpayer, the DOC and the inmates when the rationale to use Aramark was supposedly to realize some cost savings, though in actuality there is little basis for making such claims.
Lastly, Aramark lobbyists have been involved in corruption, as close to Indiana as the neighboring state of Illinois where bribes were paid.
