It is the same white trash that voted for Trump that will complain when their food stamps and Medicaid are taken away. It will be the Mexicans and the Democratic party's fault because people believe the garbage trump spews. Also when you have a one party ruling the city like Putin nothing is done and the answer to no one.
Columbus is in Franklin County. Fairfield County is very rural. I spent the first 17 years of my life there, and once you take Main or Memorial a few miles, it's cows and corn fields in all directions.
This is one of the best quotes from the article: “Instead, it’s the consequence of deregulatory economics on Wall Street that eviscerated working-class communities in small towns across the United States.” Look at the voting history for Fairfield County, Ohio. They have consistently voted AGAINST their own best interest – proof? They are “Poor as Shit.” The citizens of Lancaster voted overwhelmingly for Ronald Reagan who started the Neoliberal avalanche that has burred most of the “working-class” under a mountain of debt. Everything in their economic situation that they see as “bad,” they voted for it, so they have no one but themselves to blame. If they wanted a better life, then they should have voted for smarter candidates who looked after them and not the interests of corporate executives on Wall Street. If you don't vote for the smartest, most competent candidate who will be the best at creating intelligent public policy, you deserve everything that falls on you.
are too blind to see who is trying to help them and who is trying to screw them there is no hope for America. A perfect example of this is the elderly voters who are sustained by Social Security and Medicare, two programs initiated by Democrats, and those elderly citizens vote for Republicans who are working overtime to eliminate or cripple Social Security and Medicare. You cannot help people who will not help themselves!
Why would these people continue to support the Republican right wing conservative party whenever they go to the voting polls. The same Republican party that has shown contempt for the poor and disenfranchised for more than a century. Democrats , liberals, and progressives have always worked for the poor and middle class by establishing programs thru the federal government to protect their welfare. The United States is still the only western civilized nation that doesn't offer universal health care to it's citizens and this is mainly because the Republicans block every effort to put this program into law. The Germans initially started their universal healthcare and economic security system in 1883 ! The rest of Europe shortly followed suit. Republicans have always been whores for the wealthy and are willing to throw everyone else under the bus to keep the money flowing for their cushy jobs in government. They do not know how to govern they only know how to control and they have no idea how an Economy actually works. The proof is their adoration of the Trickle Down Theory espoused by Ronald Reagan. The only thing that theory did was to push more money into the hands of the wealthy. The comments concerning the percentages and salaries and proximity to a major metropolitan area are irrelevant when you stand back and look at the overall picture of Lancaster, Ohio, or the United States because our problems are ubiquitous. If the voters of America
"In Glass House, Alexander struggles to find a satisfactory explanation for Lancaster’s support for government austerity, self-reliance and Right-wing politics under expanding conditions of poverty."
This is critical to our understanding. For additional insight you might check out "Strangers in Their Own Land: Anger and Mourning on the American Right", by Arlie Russell Hochschild. In it the focus shifts to Louisiana where the problems are strikingly different, but the results are the same - the hollowing-out of America.
"Sixty percent of pregnant women test positive for cocaine, opiates, meth and Xanax during prenatal checkups, yet one woman’s proposal to build a drug rehab center is met with death threats."
"One in two students in the Lancaster City School District qualifies for free or reduced lunch—though many do not accept it out of pride."
Too proud to feed their children, not too proud to get addicted to expensive narcotics.
Even though Mr Bishop takes exception to this essay, MS Gurley points out several critical circumstances that have had significant across the U.S."...the corporate leadership of Anchor Hocking began to prioritize stock values over manufacturing productivity."The financial & tax laws were changed in favor to the CEO and their stick options rather than for the benefit of the company. The 2nr rule of business: make every decision in favor of profit, was changed to make every decision in favor of stock price.
A municipal judge: “We’ve seen the wrong part of our society grow dramatically in population, while the other side is having to pay for that.” When an unemployed worker turns down a $30 offer from a local doctor to mow his lawn, the doctor uses it as proof that the “underclass just want to lie around collecting welfare.”
Just who is the "the wrong part of our society" - the part that once was called line workers? Who were financially able to reach the "American Dream".
Add to this the authoritarian leadership prevalent in the U.S. in the Trump era and the rise of "Strong Father" politics and you get the "lazy bum, wrong people, Other" dialogue.
Here is what LBJ had to say about the poor - reported by Bill Moyers:
"Fleecing the Poor
We were in Tennessee. During a motorcade, the President spotted some ugly racial epithets scrawled on signs by a few plain, he called them homely, white women on the edge of the crowd. Late that night in the hotel, long past midnight, he was still going on about how poor whites and poor blacks had been kept apart so that they could separately be fleeced-. ''I'll tell you what's at the bottom of it," he said. "If you can convince the lowest white manthat he's better than the best colored man, he won't notice you're picking his pocket. Hell, give him somebody to look down on, and he'll even empty his pockets for you."
If one really wants to see the players we need only to follow the money, even if it comes from Russia.
Well, actually one more thing: This county isn't in the Appalachian region. It's not even in the Appalachian Regional Commission's definition of Appalachia, which is way broad.
Finally, Fairfield County ISN'T EVEN RURAL! It's in a metropolitan area of a million or more. Columbus, Ohio.
Also, from 2001 to 2016 the number of jobs in Fairfield County, Ohio, increased from35,740 to 44,176, a 23.6% increase. Wages and salaries increased from 26,162 to $34,846, a 32.4% increase. What a tragedy!!!
I'm a little confused. The Census tells us that 10.3% of people in Fairfield County Ohio live in poverty. The US average is 13.5%.
