Why America Needs the Left

The fight for true equality since 1776.

By Eli Zaretsky

From the beginning of the American republic, most of the country's thinkers and politicians have argued that our nation neither had nor needed a Left. Historians of the so-called liberal consensus school argue that the United States has simply always enjoyed agreement on such matters [RETURN TO ARTICLE]

Being British I do not pretend to fully understand American politics but from an outsiders point of view, I would say that you do have a problem in America when dealing with a left wing perspective.
I have seen some odd things coming from America particularly after the election of Obama. For example; I saw a picture of President Obama designed as the joker from Batman, under which the slogan read ‘socialist’. Personally I could not see a problem as I’m a socialist too, communist I could understand but socialist? This, I believe lays that the heart of problem. The right wing has constantly confused the public by labelling anyone even slightly left wing, as a communist even to the extent of blurring the lines between socialism and communism. This unfortunately is beginning to happen in the UK too. So particularly at this time of capitalist crisis we on the left need to offer up a real alternative to the continuing capitalist con which is preprogrammed to fail. Instead of dividing up the pie with a bigger slice for the poor, we need to change the process we use to make the pie in the first place.

Slavery may have been abolished without the abolitionists. A modern state may have been created without the socialists. And a postindustrial, consumerist America, and the end of Jim Crow and the family wage, may have emerged without the New Left. real estate mallorca

Occupy came. It was quickly re-defined as a movement of middle class workers.  Exclusively.Millions of post-middle class people, and those who never had a chance out of poverty, could only wonder: “If you’re still employed AND still in the middle class, what are you complaining about?” The media came along and erased the issue of American poverty, in a post-jobs, post-poverty relief nation. Beyond a few clueless souls who still have delusions of trickle-down economics, the poor walked away from this middle class workers’ movement. The movement fizzled out in spite of the best efforts to revive it.

This is a chance like no other as much as just by continuing the work I’m as of now doing, I’ll eventually locate a Vistaprint Coupons I like. It has been sophisticated. Newer Vistaprint Coupons types also have these capacities, enabling them to be utilized in this way. It would make a lot of sense if I shouldn’t simply try to get a clue dealing with this immediately. What’s next? No Santa Claus? I imagined I was making this more interesting. If you do this, the end outcome will be Vistaprint Coupons. I’m certain you heard of Vistaprint Coupons.

I don’t like raw capitalism, I’m for democracy but I don’t think it is only the political system that we need to address. You speak about “the irrepressible American commitment to equality” then what is needed is to expose the means of power politics at the grass roots, to address this http://kyrani99.wordpress.com/ which is not only an American problem.

Re-Robert Morgan’s response.. “we on the left need to offer up a real alternative to the continuing capitalist con”. I agree with you. And the problem is very bad. That is part of what I am trying to highlight on my blog at http://kyrani99.wordpress.com/  as I mentioned earlier because IMO our health is used to profit. That is very bad for the ordinary person in the community.

What a bunch of marxist-maoist drivel. Communism has failed!. It’s kaput! The author sure displays the elitism that libbers are criticized for. Check this:
Only a Left can develop the commitment and capacity to go deeper and to think independently on the basis of the country’s core values. Really? Only leftists? Wow.

Thank you, poster “jesus666,” for this insightful rebuke of the author’s argument, which is totally a considered and supported counter-argument and in no way a worthless troll.

The Abolitionists have more in common with Teapartiers and Right-to-Lifers than the Left.
