I guess movies rarely live up to the book, but this sounds like an extreme case. Our world is full of people who survive by destroying other people and the ecosystems on which all life depends. We don’t love them or want to be like them; they and their lack of morality are the problem.
In my opinion, Katniss [in the book] is not cold and does not manifest a ‘bottom-line’ focus. We love her because she cares about what is important, not just because she’s ‘a survivor’.
