The Wage Theft Epidemic

Thanks to a wave of government cuts, there's no one to stop your boss from withholding your pay.

By Spencer Woodman

Last October, Anthony M. Van Buren drove 135 miles south from his home in Charlottesville, Va., to the small town of Moneta in search of his former boss, Robert Brown, the owner of Star Valley Painting Contractors Inc. The visit was neither invited nor welcome. According [RETURN TO ARTICLE]

I say the workers become confrontational to protect their rights !
As for the law, it is becoming ineffective and/or selling out to the wealthy. Eventually people will have to set up an alternative to government to protect their rights.

Lets see, You Union is the only Union you can go to, so -if they don’t measure up there’s no consequence for them.( Notice the “only one” aspect of this?)
So, a Monopoly on Representation offers less of a guarantee, and voting for cherry picked folks to compose that entity is not working out…
why? —Because You have put over yourselves
(actually you didn’t have a choice did you? - the Union was compulsory, I guess that didn’t workout, you must be so pissed! -I would be!!!)  the very Monopoly of power right above you, and human nature is showing it’s bad side.

You can not choose a better preforming Union, so this old “institutionalized conflict of interest” not unlike other religious tenets fail the test of time, more disappointments to come, and to think you will now see unavailability to correction after lips service and placation (which you will be required to go along with) so get ready,
    it’s a new day!

The very source of Mediocrity unsurprisingly, demonstrates dubious Mediocrity in its inaction in representation of a member.
It’s no wonder a long article to gloss over that plain and obvious narrative here.

“Confrontational” when practiced outside of the established Organized protocol can potentially be seen as “going over someone” or “Grand standing”, I’m replying to bring this to your mind as to the actual reasons way, one would not be so enthusiastic about you encouragements.
And then comes to Moralizing part of your comment.
Here, we omit religious words like “sin”, and replace with words like “wealthy” and then the compelling stuffs of religious non-thought are tapped into.
Offering nothing of systemic certitude, which was what our Unions promised us all, it appears what they provide requires all this risk, and then the higher ups are insulated like priesthood and then folks who work for a living need to take the hit for the love of a fantastic futurism, complete with finally a Government that doesn’t have such an hearing problem, even the democrats can only hear what works for them not us-Maybe a little less Occupy Facebook time and a little more real time reality on the work place could be of assistance, people feel lied to, but they know better than to speak up.

Fact Checked ( not by FactCheck.org):
Really Big Golfing Millionaires are typically not as fondly handled by such parties, unless your the special candidate for which all exemptions fall right into place.
What was the definition of hypocritical again?
Wait, those “idjits” will show up with signs demanding more of something in the next 4 years anyway, I’m still wondering what was the difference.

In the early 2000’s Jeb Bush dismantled the Florida’s DOL. What we’re seeing is laws with no enforcement. In Florida we’ve taken matters into our own hands and passed wage theft ordinances on the county level in Miami-Dade and Broward. I’m currently working on one in Alachua County.

Are you capable of reading? This is a serious question, as this article concerns low-wage or hourly employees who are not in a union.

You might be the least intelligent person I’ve ever come across.  The President is now to blame for the illegal and greedy behavior of private employers around the country?  The President is now to blame for the decisions made by Republican state Governors and legislatures to gut these agencies at the urging of the Chamber of Commerce?

Please..just go away.  You are beyond ridiculous.

    Sure you do…super hero man.

This article primarily focuses on states who just happen to be “Right to Work” states where unions are virtually nonexistent.  Any other irrelevant nonsense that you’d like to contribute?

The President, has nothing to do with this. Condggitt, and if you notice, they are talking about republican run states. They don’t want people to live on welfare, But don’t wait for rich republicans to pay them. Even if they owe money to people they will never get it. They seem to think that slavery is alive and well.

Out here in California we have a legion of private investigators who pursue wage theft claims. Most of them work for unions who use them to keep what remains of the honest market in existence.  Were it not for these private eyes the whole bottom would drop out of the construction market for legitimate contractors.  This is what it means when the conservatives get government off your back—they mean off the backs of crooked employers, and the worker is out of luck.  I have pursued this work for various unions for a generation and there is no shortage of violators.  Imagine if this situation prevailed in any other area of law—if you had to hire somebody to get your burglary investigated or your money back in a stock swindle.  What’s worse is that the violators are now corporate giants as well as fly-by-night firms.  Cheating workers is just good business when there are so few cops on the beat.

As we’ve tried to tell US progressives and the middle class for years, watch what is done to the poor in this country to have a good idea of what the future holds for those still in the middle class. Unfortunately, neither were interested.

Here in Texas, we were able to get a law passed at the state level that broadly defined theft of service as when a worker does work expecting to be paid and then isn’t. It’s a criminal offense, but police barely even know about it to file cases.

Wage theft is a huge problem in a lot of low-wage industries. We just did this report that shows one in five construction workers experiences wage theft in TX and there are all sorts of other issues going on as well - calling workers independent contractors, cutting corners with safety, threatening workers with deportation or their jobs, and more. It’s shocking how normalized these practices have become:

This is happening alot in New England also.I am an organizer for the New England Carpenters Union. This is common in the construction business. What i do i get the workers to protest against the G.C. or end user (developer) The victims empower themselves lose some of that fear that they have because of their immigration stadus and fight back with these actions on the project or the owners office. But this is AMERICA this is not suppose to happen here.Workers need to organize against their employer then they will have a fighting chance. This is why we do need UNION today in AMERICA.Educate,Agitate & organize…United we Stand devided we Begggg….

oh there’s that race card I’m always hearing so much about. Honestly, you should feel free to criticize Obama all you want. There are many valid criticisms one could make. Obama has made some extremely immoral unconstitutional moves in the war against terror, and his D.O.J. basically wiped the big banks ass after they took an illegal crap all over the economy. The thing is, he’s not to blame for the wage theft epidemic. The origins are identified in the article - US Chamber of Commerce (a right wing org) lobbies hard to weaken enforcement of labor laws. Voting D isn’t a guaranteed win for labor, but voting R is a guaranteed loss

the bible law says you pay each day not weekly but each day but what do you expect within a tax base which is criminal it self

Posted by Mass Vocals on Feb 27, 2013 at 4:19 PM

dear brother so those workers are illegal ? then they have no status and the employer is criminal liable for hiring them they will not get paid aspaying illegal is illegal aiding and betting it is , frankly if there legal however they can file a court action civil wise or 93 action . or criminally as to intent there after there property can be lean and they can be reported to many agency as green card person have to be issue SSA numbers and also the AG office handle Davis bacon fraud clams , FREE   but the way this is all free if you have zippo for money if these person are your friends and not illegals I will show you what to do brother , massvocals

does this site have freedom of speech ? mr .  Buren should not be shocked when Virginia’s Department of Labor and
Industry told him that it was up to him to investigate and prosecute his
wage theft claim.  unless he files criminal complaint by plain theft with the police   or he could file civil court case or filr UCC lean on the employer and project site most jobs have liability insurance claim he get no where seeking out the contractor following him around ,

Posted by Mass Vocals on Feb 27, 2013 at 6:07 PM

everything in most cases you have to do in court as plaintiff on defendant its the way it is who needs big brother
