Reclaiming What Makes Us Human

Through the ages, the killjoys of governing elites have been threatened by public expressions of collective joy

By Barbara Ehrenreich

The enemies of festivity have argued for centuries that festivities and ecstatic rituals are incompatible with civilization. In our own time, the incompatibility of festivity with industrialization, market economies and a complex division of labor is usually simply assumed, in the same way that Freud [RETURN TO ARTICLE]

Mike. Think about it! What’s the title of this thread?

RECLAIMING what makes us human, right??????? You mean you don’t smell your own gastric expulsions? Must make you pleasant dinner company. And yet believe it or not folks, he’s still available for short notice invitations.

Anyway guys, glad to see we’re stickin to the higer elements of this discussion. Mike truly is irresistible to some, and at times he can be quite funny. We do have a lot of laughs here I guess, though rarely all at the same time. And so it goes.

    Hi,y’all!

    texasindependent,

You’ve finally figured out that bostonblackie and blondemike are synonomous? Tch! tch! tch!  I thought it was readily apparent! You are in the web of a freeper! A resilient pest that simply won’t give up no matter how many times his game is called. a person who utterly denies no matter what the circumstances of his guilt—such a loyal fascist! Sean Hannity would be proud—and then move on to the next caller.

Really, blondemike aka bostonblackie aka every other stupid name he used when he(JACK BARNES) had free reign here is inconsequential. Another political mosquito buzzing about, being a pest.

Go away JACK BARNES! Grade the papers of your okie pupae and leave politics and the exprssion to the grown-ups!

United States Posted by Aunty Rightwing on Apr 24, 2007 at 12:45 AM

I figured out who “Aunty” is. Greaser is
    posting under multiple pseudonyms.
But massive excrement is still excrement.
Was Barnes your last boy friend ?

United States Posted by bostonblackie on Apr 24, 2007 at 10:15 AM

    Auntie dear;

Interesting hypothesis.  I noticed the resemblance right away, but all flamebots resemble each other, don’t you think?  Back then I had the notion Barnes might be the disreputable SWP honcho having his D. Horowitz moment, but that old commie jack is still kicking the gong around.  You know he’s a redstate edumacator?  Color me curious.  From his name-dropping, I figured he was L.A. based.  (Mikey, he claimed to have known St. Ayn, personally.  Wowie-zowie, huh?).

Uncredible as Mikey, et alias, may be, his Oaktown footprints are pretty clear.

You can lead a troll to reason, but you can’t make him think.  I almost miss my sweet Jay-Jay.  Thuff’rin’ thuccotash!

    Goo, Goo, G’Joob!

United States Posted by luminous beauty on Apr 24, 2007 at 1:23 PM

    Aunty, hi there!

It’s all very interesting. Our friend Mike has apparently played with various sock puppets named Hawaii Jack, Bart (probably) and now Boston Blackie. It would be entertaining except he can’t seem to make a believable and variable puppet ... it’s always the same old same old. I am expecting Boston Blackie to start going on about Ayn Rand any minute now. And if the pattern holds true then Mike will be back soon and thank Boston Blackie for taking care of his “light work”. Unless the “blondemike” username has been banned? But not too likely as ITT seems to have endless respect for free speech.

I am not sure about the Jack Barnes connection though. But if I have some time to spare soon I will go digging in the archives. And Luminous Beauty makes a good point - they all resemble each other but Mike’s footyprints are all over Oafland. And his devotion to St. Ayn is second to none.

Luminous Beauty, I miss Jay too. I will drop by his blog and let him know we are still setting a place at the table for him.

I am he as you are he as you are me and we are all together!

Canada Posted by David in Canuckistan on Apr 24, 2007 at 1:45 PM

Wrong again, David. Texas Independent has
apparently concocted this whopper under one
of his pseudonyms Aunty Righty. I don’t know
if your statement that blondemike used other names
is true or not or if as I suspect it is just a smear
tactic because many of these goons here can’t
seem to deal with any dissent from their boring
orthodoxy. Probably there are more dissidents
here than people like to acknowledge so it is
easier to just accuse someone of something
impossible to disprove.  TI is definitely Aunty
and maybe Scorp, Wicky, Wolf, etc. Very similar
patterns there down to the smear tactics.

United States Posted by bostonblackie on Apr 24, 2007 at 5:01 PM

Oh, never read Rand. Any suggestions ?

United States Posted by bostonblackie on Apr 24, 2007 at 5:03 PM

    Hi Bostonblackie ... welcome!

After digging in the archives I have reached the conclusion that Mike (aka blondemike and the legion of other aliases which sadly includes yourself) and Jack Barnes (aka et al) are one and the same.

So I have to disagree with you here as the evidence does not support your assertion. If you would like to see the evidence that I have based my judgement upon I would be happy to share it here.

Oh, I tried to read Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand but didn’t get past the first dozen or so pages ... it just didn’t do it for me. I may find a copy and try again to see what Mike is raving about. You could ask Mike for some Ayn Rand reading recommendations . He has read Atlas Shrugged 18 times (maybe even more by now).

Canada Posted by David in Canuckistan on Apr 24, 2007 at 6:43 PM

David-Heh heh-and did you notice Blackie’s style? I told LB he could learn to do that, as with bart. But he still doesnt get it-the format change still cant erase his contextual fingerprints. Same old word salads, har har.

Boston Blackie: Before reading Ayn Rand you should first read Old School by Tobias Wolfe. Gives a pretty good analysis of the cult that surrounded her; the Andy Warhol of the literary set.

Thought Fountainhead was better than Atlas Shrugged, but if you are past your teens they may both seem irrelevant. The one I would recommend you read is her last work—Oakland Whitey. Its a tale of recursion involving a fan in the future defending her rep while helping destroy it. A real hoot.

United States Posted by recursive prophet on Apr 24, 2007 at 7:41 PM

Mike, my friend, I am getting tired of the puppet show. I have seen better. If the show must go on, that’s fine. I can play along, cheering and clapping, booing and hissing, as I think appropriate because I think there is some value in it. But if you want me to pull back the curtain and end this farce then all you have to do is ask.

I have enjoyed your participation here and want you to know that I support your right to be here. But, as your friend, I must tell you that I do not think it is necessary or even helpful for you to manufacture pseudo-support for your opinions. Just as I have counselled against your lack of respect for others I must counsel against your use of multiple usernames to manufacture support for yourself. Both tactics only serve to distract and detract from what you have to say.

So, come on, Mike. Be a mensch.

Canada Posted by David in Canuckistan on Apr 24, 2007 at 8:43 PM

Arpie, I think old dogs learn new tricks all the time. And puppies can learn old tricks too.
Doing them with style is what counts and is sadly lacking all too often.

Canada Posted by David in Canuckistan on Apr 24, 2007 at 8:44 PM

    Auntie Arpie,

I’d suggest blackie read Murray Rothbard’s excellent take on St. Ayn and her psychophants.  Like mixing Texas medicine and railroad gin, sure to strangle up his mind.  Then again, given his incredible capacity for cognitive dissonance, maybe not. That river running past Pharaoh rolls along so wide and deep.

United States Posted by luminous beauty on Apr 24, 2007 at 10:28 PM

I like bostonblackie much better than any of his other personas. It still serves as an example of dichotomy for the careful observer. For a “serious” writer he leaves footprints a mile wide.

Philosophy leaves me shaking my head. I barely squeaked through and couldn’t tell you objectivism from existentialism from nihlism. I prefer reality to esoteric theories. But I find quantum physics fascinating. Go figure.

Are you guys (?) having identity crises ?
The only person I know to be doing multiple
posting here is TI. Under Aunty & Scorp & Wolf
& Wicky. I saw no resemblance between blondemike
and bart or hawaii jack when I went back to last year
to check their posts. Also as far as showing lack
of respect blondemike has loads of company here.
I have never seen such incivility except two rightist
    boards I briefly visited.
    On the recommendations, thanks.
But I looked in amazon, she never wrote Oakland
Whitey. Three novels & a novelette.
Arpie, your not Aunty too, are you ?
    Just noticed some similarity.
You sick fucks gotta stop playing games now.
A friend told me that Barbara Branden got
Rothbard to admit that he was talking through
his hat and that some incidents listed by him
were made up. However, not having read him
or Rand I don’t know which.
I’ll try to check on Barnes, think he jilted Aunty
    hence her great bitterness.
So far striking out, guys !

United States Posted by bostonblackie on Apr 25, 2007 at 11:52 AM

Ah, that life would lead me down such a twisted path that I would find all this worthy of participation. Such a strange culture here on ITT. Old men sitting round a digital woodstove spinning yarns and debating history. Guess the future becomes less relevant as it dwindles in percentage of what will be ones life. So much more behind us then what lies ahead.

I sure miss your debates with Jay also LB. But I think we should play along with Blackie to encourage Mike to make the effort to convince us. You must admit he seems to be on a learning curve, and has come a long way from the days of Hawaii Jack. So lets give him the benefit of absurdity and engage Blackie while ignoring Mike. Perhaps the resulting challenge will spur some lucidity.

I AM EVERYBODY!! Dont let Arpie fool you, Blackie. He is just another of my sock-puppets. This is the land of mirror reality, and thats why I had Arpie present you with one. And yes, I am stilly bitter about Jack jilting me. -Aunty Rightwing.

    Now I’m confused….you’re Aunty Righty ?
And TI, Scorp, Wolf, Wicky, Lams AND
Cabbie in Chicago ?  You people are
too much ! No wonder very few sane people
hang around here for too long. Today I
visited two Objectivist boards a Randian
friend told me about and they were full
of lunatics too. Kill An Arab For Ayn.
Felt like a shower needed when I left.
Probably will not be reading her stuff now.
At 40 if this is what lies ahead I’ll be making
an appt with Kevorkian. Phew !

United States Posted by bostonblackie on Apr 25, 2007 at 1:42 PM

    blackie,

Sorry you are confused.  Lots of inside jokes going on here and you stepped right into them, tracking suspicious footprints behind you.

Please don’t go the Kevorkian route yet.  First, you must tell me how you get those half line posts.

United States Posted by luminous beauty on Apr 25, 2007 at 3:42 PM

So the show goes on then? Okay. But it seems we have to finish this scene.

Bostonblackie, you did step in something and it smells. Regarding the use of pseudonyms here ... I disagree. Do you have any evidence for your assertions or do you assert them on faith?

I assert that my friend Mike is a long time resident under the bridge here at ITT albeit under many different names (your’s included). Would you like to see the evidence? Or do you concede my assertion?

Canada Posted by David in Canuckistan on Apr 25, 2007 at 4:00 PM

David, there is no “evidence” of anything
including my own deep suspicions about
TI and others here.  Obviously several of
the regulars here are posting under multiple
aliases. Frankly, I don’t care. I’m more interested
in the content of what they write. Unfortunately
90% of that is drivel or worse. Unless you are
illegally acquiring people’s addresses you really
need to get a life. And if you ARE doing that you
really need to get an attorney.
I just demolished Princess Natalie for you
on the CNN thread at length in response

I have to decide whether to waste any more

    Hello bostonblackie,
“Atlas Shrugged” is the best intro to Ayn Rand, but it can be a slow read at points. If you want to get to the heart of her ideas, skip ahead and find the place at which the character John Galt commandeers the scheduled presidential radio broadcast and details “his” (actually, her) philosophy. It’s in the latter 1/3 of the book somewhere, you might have to dig around to locate it, but it goes on at length and comprehensively.

If you have time and inclination to read the whole novel it will make more sense in context, but it’s also mostly understandable without reading the rest of the story.

Philippines Posted by Kuya on Apr 26, 2007 at 11:25 PM

It’s probably out of print, but if you really must read something by Ayn Rand, try to find her book “For the New Intellectual”. I see one on paperback sale tables from time to time. It is her own condensation of her “philosophy”. Anyone who can wade through one of her “novels” must suffer from anosmia. A silly woman with silly ideas.

“But money demands of you the highest virtues, if you wish to make it or to keep it. Men who have no courage, pride or self-esteem, men who have no moral sense of their right to their money and are not willing to defend it as they defend their life, men who apologize for being rich- will not remain rich for long.”

United States Posted by Gileadite on Apr 28, 2007 at 12:43 AM

    Gileadite,

Anosmia is good for Rand.  In conjunction with ageusia, better.  As a palliative to the whiff of flatulence left by your quote, please allow me this line I have heard attributed to Petr K:

“Of course the rich are greedy.  Otherwise, they wouldn’t be rich.”

United States Posted by luminous beauty on Apr 28, 2007 at 6:56 AM

I apologized for my rude remarks in the Revolution
forum but forgot I should also do so here. Finding
all the suggestions for reading Rand filled me with
contrition for my previous behavior. I also saw,
doing some more research on other sites, that people
come and go on all of them, with just a few long time
regular users. But I think I will abstain from posting
for a while and stay busy reading Atlas Shrugged as
that was her best known work. Thanks for all the
suggestions. Please accept my sincere apology for
my former churlishness, and if by some chance I have a
relapse and start being offensive again, I apologize in
advance. Been having sort of an identity crisis lately.
I admire blondemikes confidence and passion, and so
at times I am drawn into his persona here. Think thats
why so many suspected I was him. Im not, and shouldnt
let him influence me with his funny insults. I lack his
panache and passion, and I actually like most of the
other users here. Dont know what comes over me
sometimes. Thanks again for you suggestions and
forbearance. I feel better already. :)

And speaking of Mike, I havent seen him be absent from these forums this long ever before. Hope he hasnt given up on us. He seems to have generated more posts than anyone else. Come back Mikey. We all still love you. We cant afford to have the ITT Atlas shrug.

Not an apology, exactly, but a rare bit of reasonableness.

I suppose I should offer an apology for egging on Mikey’s more common ranting and raving, but I’ll resist the temptation.

The cat apologizing to the mouse, LB? And hey, we both know one of the things so maddening about Mike is he is NOT in any way an idiot!! (hes at least up to moron-maybe even dull normal) (Just kidding Mike)

Mike makes a lot of sense on a lot of subjects. Judeophile that I am, I still think its possible the numbers killed by Hitler may have been exagerated. What is history but the propaganda of the victors? What I don’t really understand is why he finds their successful spin so offensive. All countries do this; the Jews are simply good at it like most other things. Now I may never get to ask him why he sees this as so significant. I hope hes right. Hate to think of all the Einsteins we lost if 6 million Jews were gassed.

Think Mike actually likes the way you egg him on LB, and David. Some are born to run; some to rant. Come back Mike. We know you’re not really bostonblackie. ITT seems empty without you. Just try and chill a bit. You are so much more impressive when you stay on topic and dont give in to your curmudgeon persona. Hope you just had a nice vacation and come back tanned and relaxed.
