On Monday, April 4 — the 43rd anniversary of the death of Martin Luther King Jr., who was assassinated in Memphis while helping public-sector workers to organize — unionists and their allies marched in solidarity through cities across the country.
In San Francisco, about 1,000 people marched through downtown to protest attacks on public-sector unions in Wisconsin and other states and budget priorities favoring baliouts for banks and cutbacks in public services. The march was part of the “We Are One” campaign organized by Working America, the AFL-CIO’s “community affiliate.” Working In These Times contributing writer and photographer David Bacon, who lives in the Bay Area, took the photos above. Events have continued throughout this week, all part of an effort to push back against increasingly intense GOP attacks on public-sector workers’ organizing rights and compensation.
