The U.S. military (illegally) bombed the hell out of Cambodia. This drove many refugees into Phnom Penh. In addition to killing hundreds of thousands of civilians, driving refuges into the capital city, it also encouraged huge numbers of peasant farmers to join the Khmer Rouge. Besides killing innocent children and adults, the drone bombings are creating more enemies. Angry people are joining up with the Taliban and Al Qaeda. End all these wars!

More Scars, Tears and Chains. I'll read your book, but I'm not looking forward to it. War crimes were also committed in Cambodia during the illegal war. I've heard that more than 500,000 villagers were killed during the illegal bombing that took place. There was an article in my local paper written by a former pilot. He said that there should have been more bombing in order to free those people from the Khmer Rouge. Actually, it was the bombing that drove villagers (for safety) to join the Khmer Rouge, which was quite small at the time of the bombing. Cambodians …

Speculators belong in jail. People die and wars have started as a result of speculators. The timing of the start of the Korean War may have come about as a result of soy bean speculating by Chiang Kai Shek, Syngman Rhee and their friends in the U.S. Almost 60 years later and this "stuff" still goes on. This "stuff" makes me #@$%#@ sick.

After 30+ years in the marines, General Smedley Butler (two medals of honor) was so much more critical of the U.S. government's foreign policy than Sergeant (??)Wright. I'm late for work. If you don't know who General Butler is, simply "google" his name. PS I don't know what flag that is, but I'm from the U.S. and a veteran.

Natalie, If you go to the Obama website you can watch/listen to today's press conference and read some of the comments. ...better late than never? I'd appreciate it if someone would tell me how to get rid of the flag. U.S. U.S.

Kansas, I'm right here in the U.S., but thanks for the response. I'll just have to switch from Bud to Beck beer when I write my comments. Gotta hand it to the Germans they do brew better beer. Hoping I'm wrong, but corporate America will not allow Senator Obama to become president.

All British, French and U.S. (etc.) colonialists, around the world, viewed nonwhite indigenous people as less than human, perhaps more like monkeys. To think that people should consider themselves lucky to be the descendents of slaves is ignorant. Of course the halls of graduate schools at MIT, Stanford etc. are full of nonwhite people, and of course you see them in three piece suits all over the world, just goes to show how wrong those white folks were. ...nuff said!

Whatthe.... We might agree on more than we disagree, BUT, I was reacting more to your comment, "hm, maybe we were a little hasty splitting away". I'm not writing essays here, what I do is a stream of consciousness. I left "almost" (all) out intentionally. ...just to liven up the discussion a bit. ...get a reaction if you will. I was only referring to those who took part, in any way with colonialism, not everyday people in those countries. ...back to your quote. Here is another quote from a dialogue or paraphrase, "A: ...but there were good colonialists" "B: There were …

whatthe.... I'm new at this, didn't catch the smily face the first time around -- cute. For now, I rather read a few more comments from others before adding much more. But, your comments are quite eurocentered, which is not all bad. Memmi (2 ms) references mostly what the colonizers did to the colonized mind (nonwhite). All the railroads, three piece suits etc. can't undo the damage.
