Internships and Jobs
We’re a fast-growing, independent, nonprofit magazine committed to covering movements for social change and expanding the boundaries of the politically possible, and we are looking to hire an experienced editor to join our team at our Chicago offices.
Author and historian James Weinstein founded In These Times in 1976 with the mission “to identify and clarify the struggles against corporate power now multiplying in American society.” Today, In These Times magazine reaches a record 50,000 subscribers every month, and that mission is more important than ever.
Since January 20, mobilized communities have helped put progressives in office, sheltered immigrant neighbors from ICE and launched legal challenges against the worst of the Trump agenda. As an In These Times assistant editor you'll be provided with a unique opportunity to amplify, inform and engage with these surging left movements, and to help expose and clap back against the oligarchs in power. We especially pride ourselves in our reporting on vibrant grassroots work for economic, racial and environmental justice occurring in places the coastal media overlooks, from the Fannie Lou Hamer-inspired black cooperative movement in Jackson, Miss., to the ongoing fight for voting rights in the Navajo Nation.
Editors stay stimulated working in a variety of genres—thinkpieces and reporting, op-eds and investigations—and subject matter, with writers ranging from up-and-comers to grizzled veterans.
And if the weight of politics gets too much, you’ll be joining a tight-knit staff in our roomy, plant-filled office where we keep each other grounded through lunchtime burrito runs, afterhours conversation on the rooftop “lounge,” headline-related wordplay, and lively editorial discussion on everything from big-picture strategy to the nitty-gritty of diction.
The assistant editor will be responsible for shaping and implementing the magazine's big-picture editorial strategy, in collaboration with the rest of In These Times' print team. Candidates should be passionate about progressive politics and savvy at translating this into compelling coverage that drives social change. This position involves supervising fact-checking; maintaining writer database; supervising interns; supporting senior editorial staff; and shepherding news and feature stories through all phases of the editorial process. In These Times’ editorial process is extremely collaborative, and the assistant editor is expected to have input—and opinions!—on everything from headlines to the cover story. The assistant editor will also receive structured, ongoing mentorship from senior editors. Junior editors at In These Times have gone on to work for MSNBC, Salon, the Washington Post, among many other outlets—as well as to top-level editorial positions at In These Times.
Candidates should have a proven ability to manage writers and deliver clean copy in a deadline-driven environment. We are looking for editors with a vision for achieving social impact through our key areas of coverage, such as (but not limited to): labor, climate change, racial justice, migrant rights, police accountability, Native rights, corporate capture of government, alternatives to capitalism and moving the Democratic Party left.
The ideal candidate will be comfortable editing a variety of stories, including hard news, long-form features, opinion and cultural commentary. However, editors who have a strong interest in one particular type of coverage or subject matter shouldn't hesitate to apply.
This is a full-time, Chicago-based union position (News Guild) with a salary range of $33,000 to $36,000, based on experience. Entry-level applicants are welcome, as are early-career journalists and editors. The benefits are generous: paid medical and dental (including for employee’s partner and/or family), employer-matched 403B, three months paid parental leave, lots of holidays (15 days per year), and 4 weeks paid vacation.
Send cover letter and resume to [email protected] with the subject “In These Times Assistant Editor.” This position will remain open until it is filled. No phone calls.
In These Times is an equal opportunity employer. People of all ethnicities and genders are encouraged to apply.
