INTERNSHIPS AT IN THESE TIMES

If you have a strong interest in progressive politics and independent publishing, and can work at least two days a week in our Chicago office, why not volunteer at In These Times?

Interns at In These Times gain insight into every step that goes into the production of an award-winning monthly magazine and website. Former In These Times interns have gone on to work at In These Times, The Nation, The Huffington Post, The American Prospect, Truthout, Buzzfeed, Salon, Rolling Stone, International Business Times, and many other publications.

All internship programs follow the dates below. (Note: While we adhere to the deadlines below, applications for internships in the fall, winter and spring can be made at any time.) :

FALL INTERNSHIPS:
Interns who wish to be considered for stipends must apply by August 18. Applications after this date will be considered on a rolling basis, but we cannot guarantee the availability of funding.
Interviews conducted in August
Internship runs from late August/early September to December holidays (commensurate with Fall semesters)

WINTER/SPRING INTERNSHIPS:
Application deadline is November 26
Interviews conducted week before and week after Thanksgiving
Internship runs from early January to mid-May (commensurate with Spring semesters)

SUMMER INTERNSHIPS:
Application deadline is April 1 (but applicants are encouraged to submit materials by March 15, when we begin reviewing applications)
Interviews conducted the first week of April
Internship runs from late May to mid-September

(Note that start and end dates of the internship are flexible.)

All internships are currently unpaid, but provide a thorough hands-on experience in learning how a growing independent publication works from every angle. In an effort to begin to make our internship program more accessible to aspiring journalists of all backgrounds, beginning in Summer 2016 we will offer several small, needs-based stipends to interns. If you would like to be considered for one of these stipends, please indicate your interest in your cover letter, and include approximately how many days per week you would be able to intern, whether you have access to university or other outside funding, and any other information you think we should know.

EDITORIAL INTERNSHIPS

Our volunteer editorial interns help produce both In These Times and our website, InTheseTimes.com. Depending on experience, interns fact-check, proofread, research articles, find photos, prep stories for web, post to social media and write. As much as possible, we tailor responsibilities according to the individual’s interests.

Responsibilities include:

  • Researching and fact-checking articles for In These Times and InTheseTimes.com
  • Participating in submissions meetings
  • Writing timely web stories
  • Writing regular short features in the print magazine including “Act Now,” “Blueprints” and “Art Space” sections
  • Pitching longer stories for print or for InTheseTimes.com, while receiving guidance from ITT editors in crafting pitches and pursuing story ideas
  • Producing stories for InTheseTimes.com, including html formatting and photo research
  • Assisting the web editor in content promotion, social media and traffic-tracking duties

Since In These Times is a nonprofit magazine, all volunteers will very occasionally be asked to help with publishing and fundraising tasks.

Applicants should have a strong interest in politics and independent media. Previous editorial and/or web experience is a plus but is not required.

When applying, please indicate when you are able to start and when you would want your internship to end. (Note that start and end dates of the internship are flexible.)

Applicants should e-mail a cover letter and résumé to Joel Bleifuss ([email protected]) , with the subject line EDITORIAL INTERNSHIP APPLICATION. Writing samples are encouraged, and these may be sent as attachments if they are in a .doc format.

RURAL AMERICA IN THESE TIMES INTERNSHIP

RAITT interns are required to work from In These Times' Chicago office at least two days each week.

When applying, please indicate when you are able to start and when you would want your internship to end. (Note that start and end dates of the internship are flexible.)

Applicants should e-mail a cover letter and résumé to Joel Bleifuss ([email protected]), with the subject line RAITT INTERNSHIP APPLICATION. Writing samples are encouraged, and these may be sent as attachments if they are in a .docx format.
