INTERNSHIPS AT IN THESE TIMES
If you have a strong interest in progressive politics and independent publishing, and can work at least two days a week in our Chicago office, why not intern at In These Times? We are currently seeking interns for the following departments:
Development and Communications
Interns at In These Times gain insight into every step that goes into the production of an award-winning monthly magazine and website. Former In These Times interns have gone on to write for or work at The Nation, The Huffington Post, The American Prospect, Truthout, Buzzfeed, Salon, and many other publications.
All internship programs follow the dates below:
FALL INTERNSHIPS:
Application deadline is July 24
Interviews conducted last week of July or first week of August
Internship runs from late August/early September to mid-December (commensurate with Fall semesters)
WINTER/SPRING INTERNSHIPS:
Application deadline is November 19
Interviews conducted week before and week after Thanksgiving
Internship runs from early January to mid-May (commensurate with Spring semesters)
SUMMER INTERNSHIPS:
Application deadline is April 1 (but applicants are encouraged to submit materials by March 15, when we begin reviewing applications)
Interviews conducted the first week of April
Internship runs from late May to mid-August
(Note that start and end dates of the internship are flexible.)
All internships are currently unpaid, but are a thorough hands-on experience in learning how a growing independent publication works from every angle.
EDITORIAL INTERNSHIPS
If you have a strong interest in progressive politics and independent publishing, and can work at least two days a week in our Chicago office, why not volunteer at In These Times? Editorial interns help produce both In These Times and our website, InTheseTimes.com. Depending on experience, interns fact-check, proofread, research articles, find photos, post to social media, blog and write. As much as possible, we tailor responsibilities according to the individual’s interests.
Responsibilities include:
- Researching and fact-checking articles for In These Times and InTheseTimes.com
- Participating in all editorial meetings
- Writing blog posts
- Writing regular features in the print magazine including “Act Now,” “Blueprints” and “Art Space” sections
- Pitching longer stories for print or for InTheseTimes.com, while receiving guidance from ITT editors in crafting pitches and pursuing story ideas
- Producing stories for InTheseTimes.com, including html formatting and photo research
- Assisting the web editor in content promotion, social media and traffic-tracking duties
Since In These Times is a nonprofit magazine, all interns very occasionally will be required to help with publishing and fundraising tasks.
Applicants should have a strong interest in politics and independent media. Previous editorial and/or web experience is a plus but is not required.

ART + DESIGN INTERNSHIPS
In These Times seeks Art + Design interns to help produce both In These Times and our website InTheseTimes.com, and we seek to tailor responsibilities according to the individual's interests and skills.
Depending on your skills and interests you will:
- assist with layout and design of the magazine
- work on advertising, publishing and fundraising and events design tasks.
- research and edit photos for both the magazine and website including Working In These Times, our labor/workers' rights blog.
- help translate content (both text and photos) from the print magazine to InTheseTimes.com and tablet versions.
- attend and contribute ideas to periodic cover planning meetings.
Since In These Times is a nonprofit magazine, all interns very occasionally will be required to help with publishing and fundraising tasks.
Interns must have experience with Adobe Photoshop, InDesign and Illustrator (Adobe CS5). Basic HTML knowledge strongly preferred, but not required. Knowledge of Mac OSX strongly preferred. In These Times operates in a Mac environment.
Applicants should have a strong interest in politics and independent media.The number of days/hours per week interns work in our Chicago office will be dependent on the right intern's schedule and are unpaid.

SOCIAL MEDIA + DIGITAL COMMUNICATIONS INTERNSHIPS
In These Times seeks a Social Media and Digital Communications intern to work with the Web Editor and Development Director. The intern will:
• Promote In These Times' stories and brand through social media by managing the In These Times Facebook page and Twitter account.
• Look into additional and emerging social media sites; create and maintain a presence for In These Times as needed.
• Assist with the creation of press releases, e-newsletters and other communications materials.
• Monitor website traffic, Facebook page activity and e-newsletter open and click-through rates; compile and send reports to staff.
Applicants should be detail-oriented, passionate about progressive politics and able to respond quickly to changing work priorities. Must be familiar internet and social media savvy, and should understand how to compose attention-grabbing tweets and status updates. Familiarity with Google Analytics and basic HTML preferred.
Knowledge of Apple operating systems strongly preferred. In These Times operates in a Mac environment.

DEVELOPMENT INTERNSHIPS
In These Times seeks Development interns to work with the Development Director and team. Depending on your skills and interests, you will:
Edit and eventually draft copy for fundraising materials.
Research grant and foundation funding opportunities.
Edit and eventually draft copy and assemble required documentation/info for funding applications.
Enter data and manage the donor database, and perform other administrative duties as needed
Assist with fundraising and other mailings as needed.
Development and Communications interns should have high-quality writing and research skills, attention to detail and knowledge of Microsoft Office. Individuals with experience in marketing, event planning, nonprofit management and/or fundraising are strongly encouraged to apply.
Knowledge of Mac OSX strongly preferred. In These Times operates in a Mac environment.

PUBLISHING INTERNSHIPS
Depending on experience, publishing interns work on press releases, event coordination, or donor/grant prospecting. Interns should have high-quality writing and research skills, attention to detail and knowledge of basic office software. Familiarity with FileMaker Pro and Donor Perfect a definite plus. Individuals with experience in marketing, event-planning, nonprofit management and fundraising are strongly encouraged to apply. Internships are 2-3 days per week for four months and begin in May, September and January.

WEB INTERNSHIPS
If you are passionate about progressive politics and looking for a crash course in Web editorial and publishing skills, apply for an In These Times Web internship. Web interns help manage, expand and improve InTheseTimes.com, contribute to In These Times' blog, and help with social media and community outreach. This position is perfect for someone addicted to both the Internet and progressive news and analysis.
Each (regrettably unpaid) Web intern juggles a healthy mix of traditional editorial (proofreading, fact-checking, editing) and web (content production/promotion, blogging, tagging, traffic tracking) duties. Experience with blogging, content management systems, Photoshop, Mac OSX and HTML strongly preferred, but not required.
Web interns will be encouraged to pitch stories for both print and/or web publication and will assist editorial staff with proofreading/fact-checking of print stories in the week before press deadline.
The intern is required to work from In These Times' Chicago office at least one day each week and preferably more, but some work can be done remotely via e-mail. (Interns are welcome to work in the office throughout the week; Apple computers provided, wireless connection for laptop lovers is available.)
