“White House Wants NSA Lawsuits Nixed” (A Little Bit Of CBS/AP Headline Helper?)

By Brian Zick
If "Nixed" is at all intentionally suggestive, it certainly wouldn't be inappropriate.

CBS/AP report "The Bush administration asked federal judges in New York and Michigan to dismiss a pair of lawsuits filed over the National Security Agency's domestic eavesdropping program, saying litigation would jeopardize state secrets."

As Judge Gurfein wrote, in his opinion denying the Nixon administration a permanent restraining order against the New York Times in the "Pentagon Papers" case:

“A cantankerous press, an obstinate press, an ubiquitous press, must be suffered by those in authority in order to preserve the even greater values of freedom of expression and the right of the people to know. These are troubled times. There is no greater safety valve for discontent and cynicism about the affairs of government than freedom of expression in any form…. No cogent reasons were advanced as to why these documents except in the general framework of embarrassment… would vitally affect the security of the nation.”
