Those damn liberal homosexual Hollywood-types ...

By Silja J.A. Talvi
Those gay cowboys; what were they thinking?

Today, the Concerned Women for America expressed their displeasure at the fact that the movie about "male homosexual sheepherders" was spreading "acceptance of homosexuality."

CWA also indicated that they were very unhappy with Felicity Huffman for her Golden Globe award-winning role in Transamerica, and at Philip Seymour Hoffman for winning a Golden Globe for best-actor as the raving homosexual Truman Capote.

“Once again, the media elites are proving that their pet projects are more important than profit," said Dr. Janice Shaw Crouse, CWA’s Senior Fellow of the Beverly LaHaye Institute.

That's right! As long as Hollywood gets to promote gay sex, who cares about capitalism!

I think there is a bit of truth there. As major movies (large investments of money, large profits, demonstrable value in the eyes of movie-goers) are barely mentioned in the critical and artistic press, the entertainment media and awards culture focus on a handful of fringe films with very small amounts of money that fail to earn that money back because they are “important”. ‘Transamaerica’ is being seen by no one, for example, yet is reaping a huge amount of press time and earning rewards. Is this because it is groundbreaking cinema, or because it tweaks the noses of the mundanes?

Maybe it’s about time that Concerned Women for America accept homosexuality. Wether you agree with or not it is a fact of life. There are gay people. Deal with it.

Maybe the Concerned Women for America should make a list of which subject matters they can make movies about that way they won’t have to be offended anymore.

You may want to read what CWA said.
CWA never said they were upset or displeased about anything.  And CWA never said they were unhappy about who won what award.
CWA was just pointing out that none of these movies had big draws at the box office.  And that it is a little strange that a movie that no one went to see received that many awards.
Hollywood and Liberals seem obsessed with promoting “homosexuality”.
5, 10 or 15 years ago, I had no problem with gay people .. never even thought about it and I had gay friends.  But now, I can’t stand gay people .. and most people I know feel the same way.
I keep hearing it over and over .. almost everyone I know never had a problem with gays and now they can’t stand gay people.
Libs, Hollywood and Gays just keep tryiing for force their lifestyle on middle america and our children ... and what they don’t understand is that they are just turning off middle america.
I wouldn’t hire a gay for nothing.  If I was interviewing someone and I thought or knew they were gay ... I WOULDN’T HIRE THEM.  Several years ago I didn’t feel this way.  I have hired gay people in the past, didn’t even think about it.  I knew they were gay and I didn’t care.  Now, no way ... no way would I hire a gay person.

Well that kind of bigotry in exactly why movies like Brokeback are important.
But there is another reason. The extremist gay agenda has polarized groups across the country. These radical gays have played right into the hands of their enemy. They destroy the good will and acceptance; hard fought and won by generations of the ‘different’. So too has the extreme right. They have played their part in bringing condemnation to the church and the body of Christ.
So it’s up to us. The non-fundamentalists. We have the capacity for empathy and tolerance. We have the fortitude to seek justice and wage peace.
Too many weak minds and trivial hearts are consumed with hate.  One side hates gays. The other hates the right wing. They are merely brothers. Sons of the father of lies…

So where does this leave gay Republicans? Homosexuals can be just as fossilized in gender roles and as bigoted as any heterosexual.
Why are so many people insisting that Hollywood images are as three dimensional as life? Who lives and dies by Hollywood imagery?
Doesn’t all this protest beg the question?

“CWA was just pointing out that none of these movies had big draws at the box office.  And that it is a little strange that a movie that no one went to see received that many awards.”
No one?  In fact, Brokeback Mountain was showing in 683 theaters in the US between Jan 13-15 and grossed $5.8m.  Total gross for six weeks was $32.1m.

What kind of influence is this movie going to have? Are people going to have big realizations about themselves? Now that I’ve seen Brokeback Mountain, I realize that I’m gay? Or now that there are movies about gay ranchers in the mainstream I think I’ll tell my mother that I’m gay?
Homosexuality had been around for a long time.  It’s not like it would go away if Hollywood ignored it.

Brokeback Mountain is a love story. The media and all the Fox and MSNBC commentary and all the blogging on the movie calling it the gay cowboy movie misses what it is about totally. When the day comes that there can be a love story and the sexual orientation is not the main focus THEN it will be mainstream. It’s an artsier version of the Laramie Project in a way.” Spreading acceptance of homosexuality ” is exactly what it’s about so that people can be who they are without meeting a violent death.

As someone said already, homosexuals are here and aren’t going anywhere.  Instead of being angry, disgruntled, blameful, whatever, why don’t these religious and so-called “moral” groups, do something good instead of complaining, whining, crying, and stomping their feet about something they cannot change (the existance of homosexuals).  I loved the movie and plan on seeing it again, not to boost the total money brought in, but because it’s a beautiful movie.  That’s what awards are for, to point out something that stands out in a good way.  The awards aren’t given out for how much money can be raised.  As for the people saying that they cannot stand homosexuals anymore, how much more biggoted can you get.  Let me guess they were OK as long as they didn’t stand up for themselves.  I’m sorry, but that’s like saying, “Those colored people are OK as long as they know their place”.  Well, we homosexuals have families too and if you don’t like it, I’m not sorry, that’s the way it is.  I too deserve to live my life with whom I wish, raise my family the best that I can, and if that’s throwing it in your face, then quit trying to stick your foot in my doorway and quit sticking your nose into our lives.

Considering most of the leadership of CWA is male I think they should contemplate their own repressed homosexual feelings before making comments like this.

I look forward to seeing the movie “Brokeback Mountain”.

If indeed “God is Love” then there is no room for hatred and intolerance amongst those who claim to be “Of God”.

It truly amazes me that people who claim to be Christian are so unlike Christ. What part of ” Love your neighbour as yourself” do they not understand.

Attention those of you convinced that Hollywood is busy turning the world gay. . . HAVE YOU SEEN THE MOVIE?  I hate to ruin it for those of you that might want to (IF it’s in your town - not in ours!) that in the end the town kills Heath L. over it.  THIS IS PERHAPS WHY it is a strong movie??  It sounds like some of you should have played the town extras.

Maybe if the stupid politicians and others hadn’t decided to create some big hate group in their faces they wouldn’t feel the need to protest.  YOU are part of the problem as well.  P.S.  Middleaged straight housewife here.  Find another group to take on.  I’m getting tired of this.  You don’t have to like it but you’re not acting very Christian in my opinion.

The movie opened in my city the day of the awards. The ratings are based on how many times the movie was shown and not on the number of persons who viewed it. I have been to movies where 2 or 3 persons are in the theater. Movie houses are obligated to run the film as scheduled (matinee, early and late show) and are billed for same. I have been told the scenery in Wyoming ALONE make it worth $7.50.

Ciao

If you liked the film, or even if you didn’t, go to the source and read the short story by Annie Proulx.  In fact, read anything you can find by the author.  Shipping News comes to mind.  And while you’re at it, check out Richard Russo: Empire Falls, Nobody’s Fool.  Whatever.

Even the left argues the “Gay issue” wrong. It’s really quite simple; homosexuality is not a deviant behavior/lifestyle/sexual orientation. That’s where things should start and end. Defending it is as silly as defending hetrosexuality. It shouldn’t be an issue at all. If you have a problem with someone simply because they are gay, you are a bigot. Now, homosexuals are as flawed as everyone else, but there sexuality is a natural occurence. Really, with all the idiots in the world, why would someone “Choose” to be homosexual?

The movie was actually filmed in Canada.

Since when did the academy need to recognize films for their ticket sales as opposed to their quality? Big box office draws tend to be more about special effects than acting. Does anyone really think Star wars should get the most nominations for its demonstration of fine acting? And by the way “Williams”, as someone who does a considerable amount of hiring myself I can assure you I wouldn’t hire someone I thought might be a closeted redneck. Maybe Karma, huh?

Way to ruin the end of the movie Andrea.
I think that it should be a priority of everyone to NEVER reveal the ending of a movie.  I haven’t seen Million Dollar Baby yet.  Why should I?  I already know what happens at the end thanks to the media…

Well I guess some people just want to be disgusted about something they cannot control.  You can’t make us homosexuals go away just because you don’t like us.  So in other words, I guess some are just going to be more grumpy biggots complaining about something they cannot change, instead of trying to do something good for a change.

I thought making money was what it was all about, but I guess I was wrong.

I didn’t watch TV,  excess the weather channel and it is dropping fast from my list.

Hollywood puts out mostly junk and the sooner they go under by putting out movies like Gay Cowboys one the better.

Good.  I don’t go to movies either.  Movies to me are about letting someone else live your life for you.  Get out of the chairs and lots of things will look better.

One more thing. Those Right Wingers are going to run away with the two party government, if the Liberals don’t get back near the middle of the road.

People are turned off my the screaming and cussing and will not want to put someone in office that sounds like a raving fool.

They sound a lot like the leader of Iran.

Finding homosexuality disgusting is in the eye of the beholder.  I admire Brokeback Mountain partly because it doesn’t soft-peddle homosexuality just to accomodate the insecurities and anxieties of some viewers.

Homosexuals have been unjustly stigmatized since the dawn of Christianity.  This movie brings to light the dreadful ramifications of this stigma.  A great deal of art has a strong sense of urgency because it is born out of oppression.

I can only laugh when CWA says it promotes the homosexual lifestyle.  Lifestyle?  Does this mean that it’s every gay man’s dream is to heard sheep and live in a dilapitated trailer?  At the time this story takes place, Sir Cecil Beaton was in Hollywood working on My Fair Lady.  Those who call homosexuality a lifestyle simply don’t know what they’re talking about.

As for awarding artists on the basis of popularity, does this mean that Jackie Collins should be awarded the Nobel Prize?
