Advertising: Offending Even MORE People

By Phoebe Connelly
In today's Washington Post
An ad listing Boeing, Bell Helicopter and other companies making the troubled Osprey CV-22 attack helicopter appeared in the National Journal last week. It shows soldiers rappelling from the chopper onto the roof of a building, which says in Arabic on the side, "Muhammad Mosque."

"It descends from the heavens. Ironically it unleashes hell," the ad touts. "The CV-22 delivers Special Forces to insertion points never thought possible."

I'm just going to second the Post: "Like a Mosque?"

When did Boeing start subcontracting it's advertising out to Stay Free? And doesn't it realize they deal in parody?

what’s the angle of this story again? is it offensive because the building is a mosque?  or is it cause the ad wizards are using irony instead of somber assessments of their products capacity to mangle, char, & obliterate human flesh?  is it a gag?  like, “uh, of course we never got that memo…pphffft…like, there was no Islamic pre-schools open that day…”  God bless ‘em…

O.K., I’ve been wondering for quite some time why these huge defense contractors have ads in the magazines that litter doctors’ offices. Is there actually a social class or group that is inspired by these ads to buy munitions, aircrafts, and missiles from THESE guys instead of THE OTHER guys, or what?
Since the ad turned out to be a “mistake”, I suspect that this was brought to us by the Department of Floating (Lead) Balloons.
It reminds me though of Condoleeza Rice carrying on about how North Korea had “glossy brochures” advertizing their missiles. Was she just looking down her nose at them because they didn’t have a snazzy website like Raytheon?

Maybe its good that they released this racist, crude attempt at humorous advertising. It kind of reveals the underlying forces that—racism, xenophobia, etc.—that are keeping these multi-billion $$$ businesses rolling, even as the rest of the economy continues to suck.

I think they should have had a few crossdressers come out of that helicopter and land on the mosque! Preferably dressed in sexy latex catsuits. Come to think of it, aren’t there alot of trannies in the military? Maybe they could get the arab guys to chill, hit a crack pipe or do a line, shave, make-up—and it’s time to PARTY-DOWN girlfriend! Woo-hoo!
