Bush nominates neocon John Bolton as U.S. ambassador to U.N.

By Tracy Van Slyke
What a surprise. President Bush has nominated John Bolton, a neocon and U.N. hater to be its ambassador. Even the Washington Post's lead sentence can't hide the irony of this nomination:
President Bush has chosen Undersecretary of State John R. Bolton, a longtime critic of the United Nations and a hard-liner on Taiwan-China relations and arms control, to be the next U.S. ambassador to the United Nations...

The man has been quoted saying things such as:
In 1994, he charged, “There’s no such thing as the United Nations,” saying that ‘’If the U.N. secretary building in New York lost 10 stories, it wouldn’t make a bit of difference.'’ Four years later, he attacked the international body again, saying, “many Republicans in Congress - and perhaps a majority - not only do not care about losing the General Assembly vote but actually see it as a ‘make my day’ outcome. Indeed, once the vote is lost, and the adverse consequences predicted by the U.N.’s supporters begin to occur, this will simply provide further evidence to many why nothing more should be paid to the U.N. system.”
Look for other lovely quotes from Bolton at Think Progress.
Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid's responsd to the nomination with:
This is a disappointing choice and one that sends all the wrong signals.  At a time when President Bush has recognized we need to begin repairing our damaged relations with the rest of the world, he nominates someone with a long history of being opposed to working cooperatively with other nations.  Just as unfortunate, Mr. Bolton has overseen this Administration’s flawed proliferation policy that has seen North Korea quadruple its nuclear arsenal and seen Iran take dangerous steps toward the development of nuclear weapons.  Mr. Bolton will have much to answer for during the course of his confirmation hearings.”

While the conservatives overrun their blogs and Web sites with hateful remarks and articles about the UN, very little from the left respond with articles about what would happen to the world if the UN was not around (and what would have happened in the past. SARS anyone?)

Check out UN Dispatch, one of the few blogs that highlights the good work of the UN.

Neocon propaganda declares that “The american way of life is not negotiable”. Well, neither is it sustainable.

Mother Earth don’t negotiate, baby, so even controlling the UN won’t save ya!

Whatever, Bush does what he wants and he gets away with it. All of his appointments are lackeys and yes men.

The Neocon’s view is simple: They “hate” everything evil, which is represented by everything they are not. If you are not a neocon, you will either be muzzled, or dead.

And one more! You have to hand it to W, he does not give a damn about the rest of the world and makes sure everybody knows it.

What’s the use of such a nomination if not to prove one more time that this administration disreguards the rest of the world community? We are the strongest and F… the rest of the world.

Yeah, great, now someone who knows “Okie From Muskogee” by heart is going to be heading up our UN relations.
Maybe the fact that Bolton will have to live in New York City will freak him out and he’ll go home, or possibly the S&M current in the city will entice him to let his authoritarian tendencies out in a positive way and he’ll switch parties.
Who knows.
He has the right mustache.

Bolton will have one job as UN Ambassador and one job only. Destroy the UN or at a minimum reduce it to a crying wimpy bitch to the US.

He has been groomed for this for over 20 years now.

Oh dont act so supprised. Bush and crew have made it perfectly clear every step of the way that they consider no effort at world peacekeeping (world court, or UN) legitimate. Of course they are going to send someone to the UN who is not going to cooperate with anything. Its just another way to send a “fuck you” to a system meant to help keep rouge states like our own in check. According to the Neo-Cons any way of weilding power that is short of reckless would simply be un american.

A psychiatric profile of John Bolton has points of similarity to George W. Bush?s. Although it is difficult to obtain a full picture of just how abnormal they were as children, available information shows that both were bed wetters, fire setters, bullies and class troublemakers. On reaching puberty, their sexual behavior was aggressive, predatory, and often perverse. These traits are known to be symptomatic of sociopathic inclinations, and persons exhibiting them are often extremely dangerous.
