It’s the economy stupid!

By Aaron Sarver
I hope Clinton managed to tell Kerry this in their much publicized, recent phone conversation.

Kerry continues to focus on Iraq and Vietnam. This is a mistake to everyone apparently except Kerry and staff.

Headlines from the Chicago Tribune today:

Fierce fighting rages in Iraq

and

Federal deficit soaring to $422 billion

Let the continued bad news from Iraq work against Bush by itself. What Kerry should focus on is Bush's true weak spot among conservatives, his reckless fiscal policy. Remember mid-ninties when Republicans were camoring for a balanced- budget amendment? Fiscal conservatives are nervous about the deficit. Combine this with the Bush's administration policies of shipping jobs overseas and you've got a Kerry victory in one of those Southern blue states, either Virginia or North Carolina.

I Agree.
Kerry should hit the states affected the most by loss of jobs.

The rest of the ridiculous Bush agenda of amendments against gays, pushing a religous agenda and other smokescreens while people continue to die in Iraq should be enough.
I’ve always thought if it was just the “war” then I could understand people being behind him. Not me, of course. Bush is a lying, murdering bastard.

But when I see people WITH health insurance who still can’t afford to go to the doctor and when the cost of living soars and the wages don’t even come close to keeping up, how in fuck’s sake can anyone be for Bush unless they’re sucking at the teat of profit?

I agree that the economy is a weak spot that could be further exploited; however, with the all-out media campaign stressing the strenth of the economy and claiming that the economy is improving, I don’t think many people will believe Kerry unless the weak economy has directly affected them.
Iraq was Kerry’s trump card, but he gave it away with his not anti-war stance. The number of people against the war continues to grow and Kerry cannot capitalize on it because it would play into Bush’s flip-flop campaign.
If Kerry could somehow turn into an anti-war candidate, I think he would win handily.

I think that the problem with Kerry trying to stress the needs of the economy is that he MUST articulate a good, clear plan to make changes. Without the ability to point to clear goals with steps toward successfully meeting them, he’ll just be whining. I heard a live radio broadcast of him in Rochester, MN yesterday, and he seemed to have ideas about what programs need money, but I’m not convinced that he knows where he’s going to get it, or how much he’s going to have to work with after repealing Pres. Bush’s tax cuts.
Don’t get me wrong—I’m voting for Kerry. I just wish that he was more able to talk about actual figures. And, now that I think about it, I think that would help his Iraq message, too. Working with actual figures, I mean, and having clear goals with clear steps toward success. If only he could contrast Bush’s “We’ll burn that bridge when we come to it,” attitude, I think that a lot of folks would start to view him as someone who really does know what’s going on.
Thanks.
