Cheney Deviates from Party Line

By Emily Udell
Today the New York Times printed an article reporting on Vice President Dick Cheney's opposition to a constitutional amendment banning same sex marriage. This ban has become part of the GOP platform. Cheney's fellow Republicans are none too happy. The NY Times quotes Paul Weyrich of the conservative Free Congress Foundation: "I think it is most unfortunate that the vice president saw fit to put his personal situation above what is good for the nation." Cheney's daughter Mary is a lesbian, and he voiced his support for her on the campaign trail in Davenport, Iowa. Cheney stated, " With respect to the question of relationships, my general view is that freedom means freedom for everyone."

Bush-Cheney campaign spokeswoman Anne Womack said, "The vice president has stated his views repeatedly. He restated them again at a town hall meeting in Iowa. It's also clear that the president sets policy, and he supports the president." Humph, I always thought it was the other way around.
