The Battle for NYC’s streets
The RNC is more than a week away and the battle for New York City's streets has already begun in a series of arrests and lawsuits.
In an ironic twist, four women affiliated with the organization Codepink were arrested during NYC's Mayor Bloomberg press conference on his "discount program for demonstrators" yesterday. They were arrested while they were unrolling their "pink slip," for the mayor - a 40 foot long pink banner reading ???You Say Welcome, We Say Where -- 8/29 Central Park?"
Mayor Bloomberg turned down request from multiple organizations for permits to rally peacefully in Central Park on August 29. In response, United for Peace and Justice filed a lawsuit yesterday with the New York Supreme Court to obtain permission to protest.
Later in the day, Judge Jacqueline Silberman denied the city's appeal to dismiss the case.
The next battle will begin Tuesday, August 24 when the city is forced to produce papers of why it's denying the UPJ's petition.

"By presenting a pink slip to Mayor Bloomberg, CODEPINK wanted to draw attention to the discrepancy between the Mayor???s words in front of the TV cameras and his actions behind closed doors,??? explained Jodie Evans, one of the founders of the organization. ???Requests for permits to rally peacefully in the park have been categorically denied. We do not need discounts at Applebee???s; we need an administration that sets a course for peace and respects our right to speak.???

Permits or none… people will come, and people will get to Central Partk. They’ll be peaceful, but they’ll be determined. Here’s why this has to be the Mother of All Protests:
NOW OR NEVER: THE FINAL PROTEST
NYC - AUGUST 29, 2004
THE PURPOSE
This is the summer of our discontent. In a few short weeks, three and a half years of suppressed anger, frustration and despair will spill onto the streets of New York City. Many of us have been there and done that before. We marched to protest the preparations for war, and we lost. We marched to protest the invasion and the killing, and we lost. We marched to end the occupation and bring our soldiers home, and we lost. This time, it will be our final protest. This time, it???s now or never.
Starting on August 29th, hundreds of thousands of us, from every walk of life, and from every state in the nation, will gather to condemn the effrontery of holding the 2004 Republican National Convention in the home of the Twin Towers. We will gather to denounce the GOP as it attempts to exploit the tragedy that befell this great city on September 11th. We will gather to rage at the conventioneers as they gleefully applaud the most devastating policies in the history of this country. But this will be the last time we will gather to raise our voices in protest against this deplorable presidency. Because this time, it???s now or never.
In all honesty, we???re not really coming to protest the convention. We???re not coming to influence the people in Madison Square Garden who admire and support George Bush. We???re not coming to rebuke those who are pledged to this failed president and his destructive goals. We???re coming to New York to make a very important statement to the undecided voters of America, and to send a very crucial message to people all around the world. We???re coming to speak our piece for the very last time. And we must be heard, because this time, it???s now or never.
THE MESSAGE:

Power to you all, Reg.
This whole permit BS is constraining people’s 1st Amendment rights. Reminds me of the poll tax.
“I know plenty of politicians assume they have your vote,” the president told the National Urban League. “But do they earn it and do they deserve it?”
This Bush said after refusing to address the NAACP, whose chairman, Julian Bond, has condemned the administration’s policies on education, the economy and the war in Iraq and has urged high black voter turnout to defeat Bush.
Turn out to protest, too!
Re-defeat him!
