I get the feeling that Scorcese would have handled the script better--based on his previous forays into 19th century period/costume drama. Spielberg peaked with Duel if you ask me (well, maybe Jaws).
Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter was a surprisingly good film, for the reasons Louis Nayman describes. But Spielberg and Kushner's Lincoln is a great film, with a tremendous amount to say about why slavery continues to be an undead force in American politics.
