Sports is the chief source of political metaphors. The Two Party System makes sense because it turns elections into intramural sporting events with one "winner" and one "loser," easily comprehensible without any grasp of the underlying issues and without any grasp that the winner may not be right just by virtue of coming out ahead on the scorecard.
The silliness surrounding the run-up to the Superbowl is a "planned distraction to divert attention from the action behind the scenes."
Interesting article. I often rail about how professional sport owners hold cities cities at ransom to get their new stadiums. It usually results in a tax increase that hurts the lower income people and then the team gets millions from a corporate sponsor to put their name on the stadium.
