Now Hiring: Deputy Editor

In These Times, a national, independent, nonprofit, monthly magazine and website based in Chicago, is hiring a Deputy Editor to lead our editorial team. 

Since 1976, we have covered movements for social, racial, economic and environmental justice, and sought to expand the boundaries of the politically possible. Every month, In These Times reaches nearly 40,000 readers in print and 300,000 readers online.

Author and historian James Weinstein founded In These Times in 1976 with the mission to identify and clarify the struggles against corporate power now multiplying in American society.” Through nine presidential administrations, In These Times has adhered to the historical understanding that to succeed political movements need their own media to inform, educate, orient and inspire their members.

The Deputy Editor will be responsible for supervising the editorial department, establishing and maintaining processes and workflow, and supporting the editorial team members. This is a management position that reports directly to the Publisher. 

The ideal candidate would be an experienced editor who is passionate about progressive politics, movement and electoral, and savvy at translating their enthusiasm into compelling coverage that drives social change. Candidates should have a demonstrated ability to manage others and to deliver clean, fact-checked copy in a deadline-driven environment. The ideal candidate will be comfortable editing a variety of stories, including hard news, long-form features, opinion and cultural commentary. 

RESPONSIBILITIES

Provide direct supervision for Editorial Department (Associate Editor, Assistant Editor, two Web Editors, Creative Director)

Optimize editorial processes across print and web

Manage arrangements with regular contractors (including copy editor, paid proofers, and writers w/​ regular arrangements)

Ensure editorial policies and standards are clear, well-communicated and adhered to

Collaborate with the Publishing Department to identify promotional opportunities to increase the visibility and impact of stories 

Help cultivate and maintain writer relationships

Edit print and web stories across a variety of topics 

Participate in annual budgeting, and oversee the Editorial department budget 

Participate in quarterly board meetings and monthly staff and management meetings

Collaborate in setting and communicating institutional policies

SALARY AND BENEFITS

Annual salary is $70,000.

This is a full-time, 40-hour a week position with generous benefits, including:

In These Times is a News Guild union workplace, and this is a management position. Our offices are located in Chicago, Illinois, but the Editorial team is currently working remotely due to the Covid-19 pandemic. We are open to this being a full-time remote position through 2022 and possibly longer.
