Peter Mar­cuse is pro­fes­sor emer­i­tus of Urban Plan­ning at Colum­bia Uni­ver­si­ty and was involved in the demon­stra­tions at the Uni­ver­si­ty of Cal­i­for­nia-Berke­ley in 1968. His father, Her­bert Mar­cuse, was a found­ing spon­sor of In These Times and was one of the philoso­phers who pro­vid­ed a the­o­ret­i­cal basis for the 1968 protest move­ments and the New Left.
