Shannon Speed is an Associate Professor of Anthropology at the University of Texas at Austin, and a public voices fellow with The OpEd Project. She is currently writing a book on violence and the criminality of the Mexican state. Rosalva Aída Hernández is a Senior Professor in the Center for Advanced Studies in Social Anthropology in Mexico City. She has done research in military violence and human rights in the Mexican state of Guerrero.
