Join the In These Times staff: Publisher

We are seeking an experienced Publisher to lead our business operations into the future. Reporting to the Executive Director, the Publisher will be responsible for overseeing the business and operational aspects of the magazine, including revenue generation, financial management, audience growth, fundraising, and strategic partnerships. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in nonprofit media, a passion for progressive journalism, and a proven track record of leadership and innovation.

About Us:

Based in Chicago, Illinois, ITT is a national print and online magazine dedicated to supporting movements for economic, social, racial and environmental justice, with a special emphasis on labor. ITT has survived and thrived for 48 years in the face of multiple media industry upheavals. We rely on fervent supporters, readers and staff who understand the importance of a political home for a Left that’s serious about building power. ITT’s approach to the business of publishing is inseparable from its approach to movement-building: clear-eyed, strategic, coalitional, adaptive to the conditions of the moment, and planning in long timelines for transformative growth.

Inspired by the socialist newspaper Appeal to Reason (which at one point reached nearly a million subscribers), historian James Weinstein and a handful of fellow journalists and activists founded In These Times in 1976, out of a belief that political movements on the Left need vibrant, independent media to identify and clarify the struggles against corporate power now multiplying in American society.” The organization’s founding sponsors included Julian Bond, Carlos Munoz, Daniel Ellsberg, Michael Harrington, Noam Chomsky and Barbara Ehrenreich, and its influence carries on not only in the magazine but also through the extraordinary careers of its many notable alumni.

Our print magazine regularly reaches nearly 30,000 subscribers, and our website has generated 3-6 million pageviews per year in recent years. The organization is a nonprofit supported by close to 10,000 active donors, as well as a number of foundations and organizations.
