Will Woodward for the Guardian Unlimited reports: Tony Blair began the final countdown to his departure today by promising a resignation announcement next week and anointing Gordon Brown as his successor.
On the 10th anniversary of the general election that swept him to power, the prime minister told GMTV: "I will make my position clear next week. I will say something definitive then."
