Data Brokers And Police Acquisition of Phone Records Without Warrants

Brian Zick

Ted Bridis for AP reports on the House Energy and Commerce Committee hearings on data brokers - the folks who somehow can manage to acquire anyone's phone records for a small sum. Eleven of the witnesses - people identified as data brokers - invoked their Fifth Amendment rights not to incriminate themselves. Bridis says that "The congressional inquiry was expected to resume Thursday, when lawmakers question officials from federal and local police agencies over their use of data brokers to gather personal telephone records without a subpoena or warrant."
