McCain’s streaky independent streak

Adam Doster

While the love John McCain gets from the media has been widely cited and justly criticized, I couldn't let this piece go. In writing about how the Arizona senator is balancing his appeal to independents voters with his GOP primary pandering, the Times describes him as a "Republican renegade," a "maverick" and "independent-minded." When will the press corp give it up? As Joshua Holland writes, … He's spent a career fostering that country-before-party image, even while walking in lock-step with Republicans on all but a few over-reported issues. Whether it's reproductive rights, the war, or taxes, the man is a Bush Republican through and through. Let's hope that by November, the whole country knows it.
