RNC Chair Ken Mehlman: The Republican National Committee Is NOT Responsible For Ads It Makes

Brian Zick

Bob Schieffer confronted Ken Mehlman about the racist RNC-sponsored TV ad it ran against Harold Ford. Mehlman initially claimed the ad "is being run independently of the Republican National Committee." Then Schieffer played the end of the ad, in which a voiceover is heard saying, "The Republican National Committee is responsible for the content of this advertising." Mehlman then insisted that "the law" prevented him, as RNC chairman, from having authority to review or withdraw the ad. In other words, according to Mehlman, the Republican National Committee isn't really responsible for creating the ad which it produced and paid for. Norm at onegoodmove has the video.
