Russell Brand Interviews Members of the Westboro Baptist Church

Eric Murphy

On Russell Brand’s FX show, Brand X, the actor and comedian recently interviewed members of the Westboro Baptist Church. The church has since made headlines by promising to picket the funerals of the victims of the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., in protest of the state’s 2008 legalization of gay marriage. Westboro Baptist Church previously gained notoriety for picketing military funerals and preaching virulent homophobia. In 2011, the Supreme Court ruled that picketing funerals was protected speech under the First Amendment.
