Support War Resisters

Brian Cook

ITT Contributing Editor Doug Ireland emailed me today, asking me to get the word out about the War Resisters Support Campaign. Two U.S. soldiers in Iraq, Jeremy Hinzman and Brandon Hughley, have fled to Canada to avoid fighting what they believe is an immoral and illegal war. On October 20, Hinzman will appear at a hearing that will decide his refugee status. The War Resisters Support Campaing is seeking signatures, particularly from Americans, for a petition that urges the Canadian government "to demonstrate its commitment to international law and the treaties to which it is a signatory, by making provision for U.S. war objectors to have sanctuary in this country." Ireland has written an impassioned article arguing that all progressive but prospective Kerry voters have a principled obligation to stand in solidarity with these two conscientious objectors. If you need any convincing as to why you should sign the petition, click here. To read the petition itself, click here.
