VIDEO: Talking ‘80s With David Sirota

“Most people don’t get their political ideas from what we consider politics.”

Joe Macaré

David Sirota is a Senior Editor of In These Times, a radio host, bestselling author and nationally syndicated newspaper columnist. His new book, Back to Our Future: How the 1980s Explain The World We Live In Now, argues that the popular culture of the 80s shaped a generation and continues to influence the political culture of today, in everything from the right’s simultaneous love of militarism and hatred of government, to uncritical support for political leaders (including Barack Obama).

Sirota recently visited Chicago, and In These Times sat down with him at Revolution Brewing in Logan Square, where he talked to us about his new book, what 80s TV shows like The A-Team and even Highway to Heaven have in common with today’s political culture, oursourced cognition” and why he went on Fox & Friends.
