Phoebe Connelly joined In These Times in 2004 as an intern and served as the Assistant Editor before becoming Managing Editor in June of 2006. 

She received her BA in International Studies from DePaul University, where she also worked as a reference librarian. As an undergraduate she co-authored two papers with Dr. Wayne Steger on television network coverage of presidential primaries during the 1980s and 1990s. She worked as an independent researcher for the Metropolitan Chicago Initiative (a project of the Institute for Latino Studies of the University of Notre Dame) authoring a report on the structures of local government in Berwyn and Cicero.

Her work with politics continued into two campaigns—she served as an intern at the Gore/Lieberman Illinois headquarters during the 2000 presidential election and as a volunteer on Barack Obama’s 2004 senate primary. Also in 2004 she joined the Youth Advisory Board of the League of Women Voters of Chicago . She served as the co-coordinator of poll watching for the League of Women Voters of Chicago during the 2004 general election.
In 2005, Connelly co-edited “Global Youth, Local Politics” a collection of essays by politically active youth, with Latino studies expert Dr. Maria de los Angles Torres. She has worked as an editorial volunteer for other independent publications such as StayFree! and AREA magazine.
