Charter School Follies

Lindsay Beyerstein

Whatever else is wrong with your life, at least you’re not a student at a Louisiana charter school. Unless of course you are, in which case, we feel your pain, kids.

The Delhi Charter school of Delhi Louisana has a policy of forced pregnancy tests for students suspected of being pregnant. Girls who test positive, or refuse to take the test, are forced to transfer elsewhere, or home school. According to the ACLU, this policy is a blatant violation of both the U.S. constitution and Title IX, which prohibits public schools from discriminating against pregnant students.

Getting kicked out of charter school in Louisiana might be a blessing in disguise, though.

According to Mother Jones taxpayers in the Pelican State are shelling out big bucks to support Biblical curricula that teach such propositions as i) the literal reality of fire-breathing dragons; ii) the co-existence of humans and dinosaurs; iii) the nobility of the Ku Klux Klan.
